“A governor cannot walk around the city center like this.”

Samil Tayyar of Erdogan’s ruling party said the outfit violated cultural norms, especially in a conservative and traditional province like Ardahan. He argued that other politicians wore sweatpants while cycling.

“People can wear whatever they want in their private lives, but a governor cannot visit the public in tights while on duty; this does not correspond to the seriousness of the state. In a traditional social setting like Ardahan, this is totally unacceptable,” he later wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Mr. Cicekli, appointed governor in January by Erdogan, defended himself by saying he was wearing normal cycling clothing.

He vowed to “keep pedaling” and said: I am an athlete who enjoys sailing, rowing and cycling. The clothes I wear are sports clothes.”

A petition seeking his reinstatement has gathered more than 10,000 signatures, with supporters saying he played a vital role in promoting sport, youth activities and cycle tourism.

In his emotional farewell to his supporters in Ardahan on Wednesday, Mr Cicekli said: “I believe I have not let down those who have vouched for me and supported me throughout my journey so far. I believe this is the greatest honor of all.”

He was mobbed by local cyclists as he left the province, Halk TV reported.

Nacho Sanchez Amor, a Spanish member of the European Parliament who monitors Turkey as rapporteur, spoke in favor of Mr. Cicekli and suggested that Mr. Alp was promoting the ruling party’s “conservative Islamist agenda.”
