The Malaysian minister says a total of 11 active seismic fault zones have been mapped across the country
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 11 active fault zones have been mapped across the country, including several in Peninsular Malaysia, said Agriculture and Commodities Minister Johari Abdul Ghani.
He said the Department of Minerals and Earth Sciences conducted the mapping between 2016 and 2020.
He said that six active faults had been identified on the peninsula.
They are Bukit Tinggi in Pahang, Bukpak in Kedah, Perak, Terengganu in Terengganu, Banding in Perak, Kuala Pilah in Negeri Sembilan, and Mersing in Johor.
Sarawak has a Tubao fault in Miri, he said, adding that Stat Sapa has four faults – Lobo Lobo and Minsabun in Ranau, and Lahard Data and Pinyin in Lahard Data.
He said six reference stations for active fault movement have been installed in Sabah.
He added that 47 passive stations were operational across Pahang, Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Sarawak and Sabah, and said plans were afoot to expand fault mapping and standard coverage to other high-risk areas, including Johor.
Datuk Seri Johari then said that seismic hazard maps guide local authorities and engineers.
He added that it is advisable to follow the Malaysian National Annex to Eurocode 8 when designing earthquake-resistant buildings.
Regarding early warning systems, he said that earthquakes cannot be predicted, but tsunami waves can be detected after undersea earthquakes.
He said MetMalaysia operates 80 seismic stations nationwide supported by 323 international stations.
Alerts are issued within eight minutes for earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or above, he said, adding that upgrades under the 13th Malaysia Plan aim to reduce the alert time to six minutes by 2026.
Improvements at 12 seismic stations are also underway, he said.
He said that these measures constitute a comprehensive strategy to enhance national preparedness and protect communities in seismically active areas.
He was responding to Malaysian politician Doris Sofia Anak Brodie.
She asked about the steps taken following several minor earthquakes in Johor. Star/Asia News Network
