What’s on your Mount Rushmore of American nostalgia? Apple pie, watermelon, hot dogs and fireworks, maybe? It’s a matter of interpretation, but as the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary this weekend, it’s a good time for Americans to take stock of their cultural benchmarks.

The opportunity is not lost on Michael Block, the new 50-year-old who has established himself as a central part of 2020s American golf culture, not only for finishing in the top 15 at the 2023 PGA Championship as a club professional, but also for wearing his emotions on his sleeve throughout (think: “Rory, did that go in? Nope!) and thereby taking his country on its magic carpet ride.

Block turned 50 this spring, made his PGA TOUR Champions debut at last week’s DICK’S Open (finishing T8 despite a closing triple bogey) and qualified for this week’s U.S. Senior Open Championship at Scioto Country Club.

It’s a special week for Block in his first PGA TOUR Champions major, adding to his two previous appearances at the “regular” US Open. He’s now commemorating it in Block fashion: by shaving the “USA” on the back of his head Wednesday afternoon, just before addressing the media for a spirited news conference in Scioto.

For Block, everything conspired to make cutting the hair an obvious choice. The United States men’s soccer team is in the middle of its World Cup run. He will make his debut at the US Senior Open on Thursday morning. And the Californian – a long-time professional at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club – is looking forward to celebrating his country’s birthday.

It was, as Block said, meant to be.

“Monty the barber, who is here this week for all the players, in 2018 he was a barber at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock, and I got my hair cut by him at that U.S. Open as well,” Block said Wednesday. “I just saw yesterday that he posted something, because we follow each other on Instagram, and he posted something and he was there.

“I said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. Could my son and I come tomorrow at noon before we interview?” He says, “Let’s do it.” I was walking down the 18th fairway here, and I was like, “Man, I have to get my USA head shaved somehow. We have the World Cup at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, July 4. I’m playing against the USA. [Senior] Open. This is all supposed to happen.

“Now I have a shaved USA on my head. I should be here for about a week.”

Could a US Senior Open trophy celebration be part of this week? Block will do his best. He showed at last week’s DICK’S Open that he is more than capable of competing with the world’s best 50-and-over players, climbing the leaderboard in the final round in upstate New York and coming within a shot of the lead on the back nine before his ill-timed triple bogey. He was as engaging as ever throughout the week – joking with fans, waving to the cameras and projecting jovial spirit.

Besides the final hole, Block has gained plenty of momentum since his PGA TOUR Champions debut, and he plans to take it into the U.S. Senior Open – and with “USA” emblazoned on the back of his head.

“I made it very clear in an interview about a week ago that I had a dream about this exact event. It was almost a year ago. I woke up one day. I had a vivid dream that I had won the U.S. Senior Open,” Block said.

And sometimes a dream comes true.
