The island of Hawaii is shaken by a 4.6 magnitude earthquake

Volcanoes National Park (HawaiiNewsNow) – No damage or injuries have been reported, but some residents and visitors woke up to shaking in the wake of Kilauea Volcano's most recent eruption.

A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck the island of Hawaii late Tuesday night, the USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory reported.

There is no tsunami threat or warning in the state after the earthquake struck the southern side of Kilauea.

HVO officials said the event showed no apparent impact on Mauna Loa or Kilauea.

The earthquake occurred at 11:49 PM GMT on November 25, 2025, about 9 miles southeast of Fern Forest. It originated at a depth of about 3 miles below sea level.

The earthquake occurred about 10 minutes after the end of Episode 37 of Kilauea's lava fountain, but the HVO noted that the timing did not appear to indicate a direct link to the eruption.

Most of the earthquakes in the area are caused by the movement of Kilauea's southern flank, and HVO scientists said the location, depth and seismic waves recorded for Tuesday's event are consistent with slip along south flank faults.

Officials also warned that aftershocks could occur in the coming days or weeks and that the observatory will continue to monitor seismic and volcanic activity across the Hawaiian Islands.

The USGS reminds residents and visitors to stay informed through official HVO updates and local emergency management channels.

Continuous monitoring is being conducted, and the observatory will report any changes in volcanic or seismic conditions.
