A 4.8-magnitude earthquake strikes the Indian Ocean near Singapore, but no damage was reported

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Indian Ocean early Thursday, according to preliminary data released by seismological authorities. The earthquake occurred at 01:24:24 EDT at a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter at 0.76°N latitude and 96.95°E longitude.

There were no immediate reports of damage or tsunami warnings, and officials said the epicenter was far from the Indian coast.

This is not the first relatively mild earthquake in the region in recent weeks. A 4.8 magnitude earthquake was reported on November 9 in the Indian Ocean, several hundred kilometers from Indonesian territory.

In past decades, much larger and far more devastating events have occurred — most notably the December 26, 2004 earthquake, when a 9.2 to 9.3 magnitude undersea explosion off North Sumatra triggered a massive tsunami that killed more than 220,000 people across India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and other countries bordering the Indian Ocean.

Seismic activity under the Indian Ocean is caused by the movement of tectonic plates beneath the sea floor. The area is located near the plate boundary where the Indo-Australian plate is subducted beneath the Eurasian plate, an area known to produce intense seismic events.
