A 6.6 magnitude earthquake strikes off the Indonesian island of Sumatra

The US Geological Survey said that a strong 6.6 magnitude earthquake occurred off the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Thursday.

Indonesia's tsunami early warning system said there was no possibility of a tsunami.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The US Geological Survey issued a green alert for shaking-related deaths and economic losses.

“There is a low possibility of casualties and damage,” the agency said, but noted the possibility of secondary risks such as landslides.

In Aceh Province, the northernmost province of the island, authorities declared disasters in 10 of its 23 districts and cities, as rising waters forced 1,497 people to flee their homes on Wednesday afternoon. Antara news agency reported that two residents were confirmed dead.

The acting head of the province's disaster management agency told the agency that “about 14,235 families, or 46,893 people, were affected, and 1,497 individuals from 455 families are currently displaced.”

Officials attributed the devastation to persistent heavy rains, strong winds and unstable geological conditions that together fueled floods, soil movement and landslides across vulnerable mountainous and coastal areas.
