Indonesia earthquake: An earthquake shook the Indonesian island of Sumatra amid flash floods

A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake has shaken the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, exacerbating problems in the Southeast Asian nation already reeling from floods and landslides, which have claimed more than 25 lives. Reuters reported that the earthquake that occurred near Aceh province was at a depth of 10 kilometers and there was no possibility of a tsunami occurring.

Indonesia is located near the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and is highly vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activity. Although no loss of life or property damage has been reported so far due to the earthquake, it comes at a time when the country is facing massive floods due to incessant rainfall brought by Cyclone Sinyar, which made landfall on Wednesday.

Massive floods submerge homes

The flash floods, which mostly affected North Sumatra province, left 28 people dead and dozens missing. Rescue teams are racing against time to reach isolated communities, even as operations are slowed by damaged roads and persistent rain.

Incessant rains over the past two days have forced rivers in North Sumatra to flood, causing mud and rocks to collapse in six subdivisions.

Videos on social media showed many homes quickly being submerged while families fled to higher ground. In some areas, images showed flooded roads filled with mud and carrying tree trunks and debris.

In central Tapanuli, landslides destroyed several homes, while severe floods submerged nearly 2,000 homes. In southern Tapanuli, falling trees killed eight people. More than 2,800 residents of the area were moved to temporary shelters.

Indonesia experiences heavy rains between October and March, causing floods and endangering the lives of millions who live along floodplains or on steep hillsides that are prone to landslides.
