A 6.0 magnitude earthquake strikes the city of Susitna, Alaska, on Thanksgiving, shaking ship docks

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Susitna, Alaska, on Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter of the quake was about 7 miles west-northwest of Susitna and about 67 miles northwest of Anchorage, officials said. There were no immediate reports of serious damage.

A tsunami was not expected, according to the US Tsunami Warning System.

The US Geological Survey says Alaska is the most earthquake-prone state in the country and one of the most seismically active areas in the world. The state averages about a magnitude 7 earthquake each year.

Thursday's quake was the strongest to hit south-central Alaska since 2021, KTUU-TV reported.

Anchorage is home to about 300,000 people, making it Alaska's largest city and by far the most densely populated area near the epicenter. Because the 6.0 magnitude earthquake occurred nearby, a significant portion of this population likely felt the ground tremor – increasing the potential risk of structural damage and the need for public alerts and emergency assessments.

Although no major damage has been reported yet after Thursday's quake, the size and density of Anchorage's population means authorities are treating the event with caution, closely monitoring aftershocks and potential impacts across the region.
