Trump says maintaining current levels of support for NATO would be ‘ridiculous’

President Trump said Thursday evening that it was “ridiculous” for the United States to continue its “one-sided” relationship with NATO. His remarks come less than a week before the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.

Mr. Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: “They weren’t there for us!!!” and Washington’s relationship with NATO “is not reciprocal.”

He has repeatedly attacked European allies for their response to the war in Iran, with several countries restricting the use of bases for U.S. forces, although he did not consult them beforehand or involve them in any planning regarding its economic and security fallout.

The president has said he could try to remove the United States from the alliance, although he would need Congress to approve such a move.

Mr. Trump insists that he wants Europe to play a leading role in its own defense, and Washington has already decided to scale back its commitments.

His message on Thursday included a chart showing NATO spending amounts, with the United States investing significantly more than the other member states represented.

Under pressure from Mr. Trump, NATO leaders agreed at a meeting last year to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035.

The next NATO summit, which will bring together 32 member states, will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Turkish capital.

The alliance, founded in 1949, became a U.S.-led defense force credited with maintaining stability in Europe, keeping the Soviet Union at bay and cementing Washington as a world power for decades to come.
