A magnitude 6 earthquake in Susitna shakes Thanksgiving

Thousands of Alaskans felt a 6.0 magnitude earthquake beneath Susitna, Alaska, at approximately 8:12 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning. Reports came from Homer to Valdez and north to Fairbanks of residents being shaken awake. Our new Gen3 detection system quickly calculated size and location (reviewed by our on-duty seismologist!) and produced more detailed information, such as the focusing mechanism, within minutes (Figure 1). Given the depth of the quake (about 40 miles, or 70 kilometers – Figure 2), even those closest to the epicenter reported minor damage such as small cracks in drywall and wobbly images.

Many have asked if this is an aftershock of the M7.1 Anchorage earthquake that occurred on November 30, 2018. This morning's event occurred outside the aftershock zone of that earthquake (Figures 3 and 4). The Susitna earthquake likely occurred within the subducting Pacific plate as it moved beneath the North American plate (Figure 2). This type of earthquake is relatively common in southern Alaska (see our recent radio segment on this topic.)

There have been aftershocks (the largest being 3.2 magnitude as of this writing), and we expect aftershocks in the area to be more common over the next few weeks. US Geological Survey forecasts indicate a 25% chance of an earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale occurring next week.

How strong is the vibration felt? Reported on an intensity scale, the Sustina event had a shaking intensity of V, according to the USGS “Did You Feel It?” Responses. According to reports, damage from this level of vibration generally ranges from mild to very light. Locations farther from the epicenter, such as Nikiski (CAPN station) and Anchorage (K22 station) felt the earthquake longer and stronger (Figure 5). This is because it is located in the Cook Inlet Basin, and sedimentary basins trap seismic waves and enhance shaking.

While the proximity to the anniversary of the 2018 Anchorage earthquake seems notable, there is no time of year when deep earthquakes are more likely, and the timing of this quake in late November is just an interesting coincidence. In addition, the type of earthquake was quite different, as this morning's event was caused by lateral sliding within the subducting plate, whereas the 2018 anchoring event was caused by thrusting motion typical of the Pacific plate (Figure 3).
