A series of earthquakes shake Indonesia: what you need to know
A series of earthquakes struck Indonesia within 24 hours between Friday and Saturday, highlighting the seismic risks that remain in one of the world's most geologically active regions.
The magnitude of the three quakes ranged from 4.4 to 4.8, according to a seismic map issued by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and no tsunami warnings were issued.
Why does it matter?
Indonesia lies on the “Ring of Fire,” a vast horseshoe-shaped region surrounding the Pacific Ocean known for its frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
The country's location places it above the junction of multiple tectonic plates, including the Australian Plate and the Sunda Plate, which contributes to regular earthquakes.
Historically, major earthquakes in this region have led to catastrophic consequences, including devastating tsunamis, sparking global concern every time new activity is detected.
What do you know?
The USGS reported three large earthquakes within a 24-hour period in the Banda Sea and Tumini Bay.
The first earthquake on Friday struck the Banda Sea with a magnitude of 4.4 and a depth of 78 miles, while a second earthquake on Saturday struck the sea, about 74 miles west of Tual, at a depth of about 80 miles and with a magnitude of 4.5.
To the north, the third quake struck off the coast of Gorontalo, about 72 miles south of land in Tomini Bay. The third, also the most powerful, had a magnitude of 4.8 and struck at a depth of 109 miles.
The Associated Press reported that the earthquakes come just days after the eruption of Mount Semeru volcano in Indonesia, the highest peak in Java. The eruption prompted evacuations as villages were covered in falling ash, clouds of smoke and lava gas, the Indonesian Geological Agency said in a statement.
Indonesia has a well-documented history of severe seismic events. Notably, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck the northern coast of Sumatra in December 2004. This event, described as “one of the largest earthquakes ever measured on Earth,” triggered a devastating tsunami that led to significant loss of life and infrastructure in several countries bordering the Indian Ocean.
The region also witnessed several strong earthquakes in 2007, including a magnitude 8.4 tremor that was followed hours later by another tremor measuring up to 7.9 magnitude.
What people say
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said on its website: “Most earthquakes and volcanic eruptions do not strike randomly but occur in specific areas, such as along plate boundaries. One such area is the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the Pacific plate meets several surrounding tectonic plates. The Ring of Fire is the most seismically and volcanically active area in the world.”
What will happen next?
Authorities and monitoring agencies are expected to continue monitoring aftershocks and assessing any damage caused by the recent earthquakes.
Given Indonesia's geological location and seismic history, disaster preparedness efforts remain crucial for local communities. Regional and international earthquake and tsunami warning systems continue to play a vital role in protecting lives throughout Indonesia and the Indian Ocean Basin.
