A small earthquake was felt by some in western Surrey County this morning

Let me take you from Charlotte to Boone this morning where it's cold and wet. Temperatures are near freezing, which has me concerned about some bright spots there. As you can see, the roads look wet mainly in downtown Boone on King Street, but as you head a little further out of the cities and into some of those cooler valleys, there may actually be some slick spots where the moisture is moving around. Temperatures are cold out west here in the Triad. We're sitting in the mid to upper 30s, so it's not cold enough for anything other than just regular rain. We get some rain here in the western Piedmont and foothills, but when it's colder, temperatures are at or below freezing in the mountains. This resulted in a wintry mix of freezing rain. Kind of a messy mix. There will likely be a few sleet mixed in here as this moisture rolls over the mountains. You see that pink and purple back there, picking up some light winter precipitation and Watauga Ash, Alleghany, Grayson counties, and maybe even West Wilkes or Western Surry two. So, for the mountains this morning up there in the Blue Ridge, keep in mind that there may be some great spots, especially the steps, sidewalks, and bridges on your way to church. They have a winter weather warning in place until noon today. All this must change the terrain very quickly. Temperatures will rise above freezing this morning, and everything in the mountains will start to drop around mid-morning. For the rest of us, that kind of moisture is long-lasting. We will have some clouds, some sprinkles, and occasional light rain throughout most of the day. Today, a cold front is approaching, but it is moving very slowly, so it will take its sweet time to move through it. This will result in a cold, cloudy and wet Sunday for us. So it's not the nicest day of weather. Good for a nap, and watching football in the afternoon will keep the rain chances fairly low as they will be occasional, but we stay hydrated in the mid 40s to highs here in the Triad. Later this afternoon, the foothills will reach the mid 40s as well before rain chances begin to ease in the afternoon and evening. For the mountains. We got impact icons this morning due to a winter weather warning. Also, there is potential for some nice spots on the roads after lunchtime with rain in the highlands and reaching the low 40s later this afternoon. This is just the beginning of a very cold and active weather pattern that will shape at least the next seven days. We have several systems on the way and are preparing to go through the first few days of December. We have today, and then our next day arrives from Monday night to Tuesday. Here's what this system looks like. It feels wetter and cooler too. Widespread heavy rain is expected to arrive Monday night and move north and east across the Piedmont as we head into Tuesday. Tuesday morning's drive looks beautiful before the rain starts to move out and taper off throughout the rest of the day. This will be too much rain for us. It's going to be cold, and it's not going to be fun, but that's what we need to help with the drought. Of course we need the rain for a while now. We can talk about up to an inch possible across the trans-Piedmont region of this system. On the other hand, in the mountains where it is colder, moisture flows. We may have some freezing rain and ice issues Monday night and into Tuesday. Up here, some models suggest there could be about a quarter of an inch of ice, which is certainly enough to cause some problems. So we want you to stay up to date with the forecast. Tuesday is a weather day with a chance of cold rain and the possibility of some mountain ice. We then dry out the system on Wednesday and Thursday before another cool and wet system arrives on Friday and indoors

According to the USGS, the quake occurred about three miles southwest of the Lowgap at 7:11 a.m. on Sunday, November 30.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake measured 1.6 magnitude.

Lowgap is a small town located in western Surrey County with a population of about 200 people. As of 10 a.m., two people reported feeling the earthquake. There are no reports of damage.
