As the pages of the calendar turn to December, we move into a part of the year primarily associated with the holidays—whatever flavor of religious or non-religious observance you choose.

But it's more than that for Humboldt County residents. It is time to think about, and perhaps worry about, the threats posed by natural disasters. In three of the past four years, there has been a massive earthquake in December. The most recent one, December 5, 2024, came with a tsunami threat and an evacuation warning, and frankly, the latter was not the best response.

We should not forget the “thousand-year floods” that struck the country in 1955 and 1964, only nine years apart.

We live in the most seismically active area in the contiguous United States. We get a lot of rain. We are a hotspot for natural disasters. It's a simple fact.

It should be noted that December is not necessarily our earthquake month.

“There is nothing special about this time of year that makes earthquakes more likely,” Lori Dengler wrote in her column in 2023. “It was pure coincidence that magnitude 6 quakes would occur on that date in 2021 and 2022,” when “three-peats” on December 20 did not occur.

Although there is no quantifiable data to construct a Venn diagram of Humboldt County, the month of December and the intersection of earthquakes, the fear is real. It is normal to be nervous. Or even afraid. Strong earthquakes, like 7.0 last year, are scary.
