Dalal's story is one of many testimonies documented by a team from the Lutheran World Federation's country program in Syria, which reveal how small interventions can restore dignity, safety and hope. They are part of the Lutheran Federation's recently completed five-month recovery and resilience project to support survivors of the earthquake that struck the country and neighboring Turkey in 2023. Through psychosocial and health care, and the provision of food baskets and hygiene kits to the most vulnerable, thousands of people are finding dignity, safety and hope again.

Funded by the Presbyterian Church (USA), the project provided mental health support, community outreach, and basic humanitarian assistance to some of the most vulnerable families in Aleppo.

For Faten Kharsa, training with the newly established Community Health Committee quickly became a life-saver. When a relative developed worrying symptoms, she monitored her blood pressure for two weeks, detecting dangerously high levels that led to an early diagnosis. Her experience shows how community knowledge can protect entire families.

Bassam Al-Khalaf, who takes care of ten of his relatives, including three children with disabilities, said that food and hygiene supplies have lightened his heavy burden. “I can't afford these supplies,” he said. “So the care packages have been a huge support for us.”

A community-based approach to healing and stabilization

Through a comprehensive mental health and psychosocial support programme, the project reached 1,470 people through group and individual counselling, psychological first aid, home visits for those unable to travel, and organized therapy sessions for children and adults. A five-day specialized training also equipped 22 local staff and community health workers with trauma-focused skills, strengthening local capacity to continue providing support long after the project ends.

To enhance knowledge and resilience at the community level, awareness sessions were organized on how to deal with stress, emotional regulation, prevention of gender-based violence and early marriage, as well as family communication. Messaging was expanded through thousands of print publications and a digital campaign that reached 24,000 people.

One of the main achievements was the establishment of two community health committees in the Al-Fardous and Al-Salehin neighborhoods, including 23 male and female volunteers. After training on early detection of high blood pressure and diabetes, promoting disease prevention, and sharing vital health information, the committees are now the trusted first line of support in their neighbourhoods.

Assistance with urgent needs

After assessing 1,200 families, the humanitarian team identified the most vulnerable families and assisted more than 7,000 individuals. Nearly 5,000 received food baskets, while 1,500 received hygiene kits, 300 diaper kits and 300 dignity kits for women and girls were provided. Post-distribution monitoring showed that all beneficiaries are keen to continue receiving similar services, especially in a region experiencing severe economic difficulties.
