On March 28, 2025, two deadly earthquakes struck central Myanmar, devastating communities already living through years of conflict. The earthquakes caused widespread destruction of homes and vital infrastructure, killed thousands, and plunged millions into a deeper humanitarian crisis. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced in a country already suffering more than 3.2 million internally displaced persons since the military coup in 2021. Meanwhile, people in rural areas affected by earthquakes are struggling to access basic medical and health services, and the increasing economic collapse is forcing people to adopt more damaging coping mechanisms. In total, 21.9 million people across the country, more than a third of the population, will need humanitarian assistance in 2025.3

As communities in central Myanmar work to rebuild and recover, violence continues to escalate around them. The quakes occurred amid an escalating civil war between the military junta, which seized power in 2021, and a wide range of resistance groups, including the Government of National Unity, an opposition government formed by elected leaders ousted in the coup. According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, there have been more than 600 military strikes since the earthquakes – 94% of them during supposed ceasefire periods – with schools, religious sites and other protected sites frequently targeted by the junta.4 The junta has continued to kidnap young men, forcing them to enlist through a conscription programme. Nationwide humanitarian efforts are struggling to meet people's needs due to severe funding shortfalls and access barriers, leaving millions without adequate support.

Despite these challenges, local communities and organizations have been at the forefront of the response; Clearing rubble, sharing food, providing shelter, and supporting each other without waiting for official help. Local communities in Myanmar continue to play a central role in recovery efforts, drawing on long-standing mutual support practices.
