The doctor who sold ketamine to Friends star Matthew Perry has been jailed BBC News

The California doctor who gave Friends star Matthew Perry ketamine has been sentenced to 30 months in prison in the US. The 54-year-old actor died of a ketamine overdose in 2023 after battling addiction and depression. Dr. Salvador Plasencia was one of five indicted in a US federal investigation into how Perry obtained the anesthetic drug through an underground supply network in Hollywood. The actor's family asked the judge to impose a long prison sentence, saying that Plasencia is “the most guilty” of the defendants. They talked about their struggle to understand that he had repeatedly drugged Perry. Perry's mother said Dr. Plasencia abused her position, a charge the doctor admitted. He told the judge: “I've failed myself. There's no excuse. I can't undo what I've done. I know that. I should have protected her, like my mother said. I'm sorry.” Plasencia pleaded guilty to four counts of distribution of ketamine. The charges carried a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, although prosecutors had asked for a sentence of three years. Four other people charged in the case – including another doctor, his assistant and two people who supplied the dose of ketamine that killed Matthew Perry – have also pleaded guilty and will be sentenced in the coming months. Best known for playing Chandler Bing on Friends, the sitcom star had been open about his mental health issues and drug addiction for years.
