ShakeAlert sends a false alarm about a 5.9 magnitude earthquake

The ShakeAlert computer system, which warns of the imminent arrival of shaking from earthquakes, sent out a false alarm Thursday morning about a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in Carson City, Nevada, but that didn't actually happen.

Both the MyShake app and a wireless emergency alert system — similar to Amber Alert — launched on phones across the region, including the San Francisco Bay Area, the Sacramento area, and in eastern California, just after 8 a.m.

The problem is likely caused by a problem with the algorithm used to calculate early warnings for earthquakes, according to Angie Lux, a project scientist at the UC Berkeley Seismic Laboratory.

It was not immediately clear how many phones received the incorrect alerts. The earthquake report was later deleted from the MyShake app — which carries early earthquake warnings from the US Geological Survey's ShakeAlert system — and from the USGS earthquake website.

“We haven’t detected any earthquakes,” Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the US Geological Survey, said Thursday morning.

The ShakeAlert system has previously proven effective in giving seconds of warning before expected tremors from large earthquakes, including a 5.2 magnitude earthquake in San Diego County in April; the earthquakes that struck El Sereno and the Malibu area last year; And the East San Jose earthquake in 2022.

This is the first time the ShakeAlert system has issued an early warning about an earthquake that has not already occurred, Lux said. ShakeAlert issued 170 alerts for real earthquakes.
