A strong M6.2 earthquake strikes Mindanao, Philippines

The epicenter was located 34 kilometers (21 mi) westwest of Sarangani (population 7,506), 55 kilometers (34 mi) south of Glan (population 24,256), 73 kilometers (45 mi) southwest of Malapatan (population 19,439), and 80 kilometers (50 mi) south of Benue (population 111). 541), Philippines.

There is no threat of a tsunami from this earthquake. According to USGS estimates, little or no area is expected to be affected by liquefaction or landslides, with few or no residents exposed.

The earthquake struck the same general area in southern Mindanao affected by the devastating M7.8 offshore Sarangani earthquake on 8 June 2026. This earthquake occurred about 32 km (20 mi) south of Maasim at a depth of 33 km (20.5 mi), triggered tsunami warnings, and was followed by a strong aftershock sequence that included a M6.7 event.

The June earthquake caused widespread damage throughout Sarangani province and General Santos City, including collapsed and damaged buildings, landslides, disruption of power and water supplies, and damage to schools, hospitals, homes and other infrastructure.

The latest consolidated government figures show the June 8 earthquake left 94 dead, 1,316 injured and 18 missing as of July 8, according to the NDRRMC’s 28th Situation Report.

The DSWD assessment dated July 13 reported that 391,891 families, or 1,655,313 people, were affected in 650 barangays in Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao Region, Sokssargin and Barangay. Of these, 95,629 people remained displaced, including 31,463 in 80 evacuation centers and 64,166 staying with relatives or friends.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development recorded 121,426 damaged homes, including 19,305 destroyed and 102,121 partially damaged homes.

Today’s M6.2 earthquake is located about 34 kilometers (21 mi) west of Sarangani and about 87 kilometers (54 mi) south of General Santos, although at a much greater depth of about 68 kilometers (42 mi), compared to 33 kilometers (20.5 mi) for the mainshock in June.
