The warning of a magnitude 5.9 earthquake turned out to be a false alarm Local news

Many Northern Nevada residents received an earthquake alert, urging them to duck and take cover just after 8 a.m. Thursday.

The alert said a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck east of Dayton, about 23 miles from Reno. This turned out to be a false alarm.

The USGS says it's not a system malfunction, so they're looking into what exactly happened during the warning time.

“There were no major network failures or outages,” says Robert De Groot, Shake Alert operations team leader. “No one forgot to press a button or anything like that. In fact, the system is fully automated, and it did what it was supposed to do.”

A false alarm like this rarely happens, so all warnings should be taken seriously, De Groot says.

He tells us that if there really was a 5.9 earthquake, it would have caused some serious damage to buildings and water and power lines in the Dayton and Carson City areas. Even people in San Francisco would have felt a slight tremor in the ground.

If you feel an earthquake, drop to the ground immediately, find the nearest cover, and sit still until the quake passes, says Christy Rowe, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory.

“50% of injuries are from falling objects or from people losing their footing while shaking and falling,” she said. “So, you can prevent 50% of injuries by doing a drop, cover or stabilize when you have a warning or start feeling the shaking.”
