The Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) reported a 4.0 magnitude earthquake in Spain near Gasteiz/Vitoria, Araba/Alava, Basque Country, just 8 minutes ago. The earthquake struck after midnight on Monday, December 8, 2025, at 12:10 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5 km. The exact size, epicenter, and depth of the earthquake may be reviewed over the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from RaspberryShake's citizen seismometer network that also listed a magnitude 4.0 quake. A third agency, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), reported the same earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7. Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake was likely felt by many people in the epicenter area. It shouldn't cause major damage, other than things falling off shelves, broken windows, etc. In Berrosteguieta (population 590), located 5 km from the epicenter, and Gasteiz/Vitoria (population 257,400), 7 km away, the earthquake should have been felt as a slight shaking. Weak shaking may have been felt in Miranda de Ebro (population 39,300), located 23 km from the epicenter, and Arrasate/Mondragon (population 22,000), 33 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the earthquake may be felt as very weak tremors include Durango (population 28,200) which is 38 km from the epicenter, Basauri (population 42,700) 45 km away, Santotxo (population 60,000) 47 km away, Bilbao (population 347,300) 49 km away, and Barakaldo (population 100,400) 54 km away.
