Assad's fall last December was a shock as he was overthrown by rebel forces. New interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former Jihadi leader, now rules a country torn apart by 13 years of war, with ongoing sectarian violence, ruined cities and no guarantee of a stable future. However, thousands are gathering in Damascus to celebrate a day many Syrians could not have imagined. For filmmaker and activist Waad al-Kateab, who documented atrocities under siege in Aleppo for this program and in his Oscar-nominated documentary 'For Sama', it's much more than an anniversary. Earlier this year, she returned to Syria with her husband Hamza, a doctor, to find her country broken, but at least with the hope of healing.
