Tsunami warnings were lifted after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan

Japan lifted all tsunami warnings Tuesday morning, hours after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off eastern Aomori Prefecture at around 11:15 p.m. Monday, triggering warnings for coastal areas in Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate prefectures.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) recorded a seismic intensity of 6 highest on Japan's Shindo scale in Hashinohe City, Aomori Prefecture. According to the JMA, the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 50 kilometers.

The Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) reported that the tsunami warning level in the area was reduced to a warning early Tuesday, after waves reaching a height of 70 cm were detected in some areas.

However, the agency urged people to be cautious in anticipation of more earthquakes in the region.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said the government was collecting information on casualties and property damage. The government established a crisis management office in the Prime Minister's Office.
