Japan lifts tsunami warning after a 6.7 magnitude earthquake

A strong earthquake occurred off the coast of northern Japan on Friday, the Meteorological Office said, days after a larger quake rocked the region and injured at least 50 people.

The Japan Meteorological Agency raised the strength of Friday's earthquake to 6.7 degrees and warned that tsunami waves up to one meter high could hit the North Pacific coast.

Ultimately, waves of up to 20 cm (7 inches) were recorded on the main northern island of Hokkaido and in the Aomori region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, before the tsunami warning was lifted.

Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) said that there was no apparent change in any of the ports hit by the waves.

The USGS also said the quake measured 6.7 and was 130 kilometers (81 miles) off the city of Kogi in Iwate Prefecture on the main island of Honshu.

NHK said the shaking level was lower than the larger 7.5-magnitude quake late Monday, which knocked items off shelves, tore up roads, shattered windows and triggered tsunami waves up to 70 cm high.
