Japan lifts tsunami warning after major aftershock
Japan lifted its tsunami warning on Friday after a strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake occurred earlier in the day, prompting evacuation orders in some places in coastal areas overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
The quake occurred 70 miles northeast of the town of Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture, at a shallow depth of 6 miles, according to the US Geological Survey. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami warning of up to 0.2 meters, or 0.66 feet, for areas of the main island of Honshu and in the Hokkaido region in the far north.
NHK reported that the city of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture in the country's northeast issued an evacuation order, and officials urged people living near the coast and rivers near the sea to head toward inland areas.
Tohoku Electric Power said no abnormalities were detected at the Higashidori nuclear power plant in Aomori, or at the Onagawa nuclear power plant in Miyagi.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Several hours after the quake, NHK reported that all tsunami warnings had been lifted.
Warning of major earthquake
Several aftershocks have occurred in the area off northeastern Japan since a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck offshore on December 8. This earthquake led to tsunami warnings for coastal areas across northeastern Japan. At least 20 people were injured and tens of thousands were evacuated from tsunami warning areas. The agency said tsunami waves up to 27 inches high were detected in several places, but there were no reports of serious damage.
In response to the 7.6 magnitude earthquake, the JMA for the first time issued a warning of a higher-than-normal probability of a massive earthquake in northern Japan.
The government created a mega-earthquake alert in December 2022 based on historical records of subsequent major earthquakes that occurred along the Japan and Chishima trenches following 7-magnitude earthquakes.
“If a M7.0 or larger earthquake occurred in or around the potential source area of megaseismicity along the Japan and Chishima trenches, the probability of a large earthquake occurring is considered relatively high,” the JMA said, while adding that the probability of such an earthquake occurring was about one in 100.
He advised people to check evacuation routes, prepare emergency kits, secure household furniture, and ensure there is food, water and portable toilets.
Officials confirm that no evacuation recommendation has been issued, but they advise people to remain vigilant in the coming days.
The Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) quoted the Director of Disaster Management at the Cabinet Office, Morikubo Tsukasa, as saying in a press conference that global earthquake data indicate that there is a possibility, but not an expectation, of a larger earthquake.
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the same area, about 67 miles northeast of Kogi, on Wednesday, shaking coastal communities. Wednesday's earthquake did not trigger a tsunami warning, and there were no reports of serious damage or injuries.
