Mountain sides collapse after a huge earthquake

A powerful earthquake has caused widespread landslides and avalanches in Kluane National Park and Reserve, according to the Yukon Geological Survey (YGS). Fortunately, the earthquake occurred outside the mountaineering season.

Last week, YGS staff took advantage of the clear weather to fly into the remote area and assess the effects of the earthquake. The flybys were conducted to document landslide and avalanche activity, verify satellite observations, and determine whether the earthquake had ruptured the Earth's surface.

Despite evidence that the fault slid a few meters to a depth of about five kilometres, YGS found no clear signs of the rupture reaching the surface. However, scientists point out that any surface rupture could be hidden beneath the glacial ice.

The quake triggered some large landslides, especially on the slopes of Mount King George, a famous 3,741-meter peak located about 40 kilometers east of Mount Logan. The first ascent of King George was in 1965, read about it in the 1966 American Alpine Magazine here.

When the survey team arrived, dust clouds were still visible from the recent large slide. Other smaller landslides were seen on Mount Vancouver, Mount Logan and nearby subsidiary peaks. Early results indicate that the zone of maximum fault slip, as well as most of the aftershocks, occurred beneath or immediately adjacent to King George Mountain. In addition to rockslides, the earthquake caused extensive damage to the glacier. As mentioned, icebergs and waterfalls are usually broken and brought down by vibration.

In May 2017, Argentine solo mountaineer Natalia Martinez spent four days stranded on Mount Logan after powerful earthquakes rocked the Yukon and Alaska, triggering avalanches and destabilizing snow and ice around her high camp. “Fortunately, this event did not occur during the mountaineering season,” YGS said, noting that earthquake-triggered rockslides and avalanches have caused deaths in the past. The survey warns that damaged ice and ongoing rockfall resulting from landslide scars may pose new risks to future mountaineering and skiing trips in the region.
