I've heard a lot about the importance of mutual aid, of building community so we can help each other when things get tough, whether because of a fire or an earthquake or just… 2025. My neighborhood is doing pretty well: we have a Google group, some disaster supplies, and a long-running Halloween party. But I wanted to do more.

I spoke with my neighbor who is a busy mom with a full-time job. “How about holiday decorating?” So, I sent a note to our Google group. “Come get hot chocolate.”

On Friday morning, we set up a table for our drive-thru and delivered the crock pot. Lesson 1: It takes a long time to heat milk in a crock pot. Lesson 2: Just being outside our homes helps. Over the next few hours, at least 25 neighbors stopped by. Decorating took longer – but so what? Lesson Three: You never know when you might be needed. That afternoon, I heard my neighbor yell, “Hey, pay attention!” A car just passed by an elderly woman who was pushing a cart in the middle of the street.

I watched my neighbors gingerly suggest to the woman that she move to the sidewalk. Turns out she was on her way to the food pantry a few blocks away. A neighbor offered to drive her there. She later returned saying the store was closed, but gave the woman her number and offered to drive her on Monday.
