Ancient Greek mosaics found under a building destroyed in the 2023 Türkiye earthquake

A floor mosaic containing a Greek inscription dating from late antiquity was uncovered during excavations at a building site in Hatay, southern Turkey, on the site of a building destroyed in the 2023 earthquakes that killed more than 50,000 people.

The discovery was made in the Maşoğlu neighborhood of the Antakya region, where a three-story building collapsed during the two earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023.

After the rubble was removed, construction work on the site began again. Work stopped when workers came across a tessellated area while excavating the foundation.

In response, salvage excavations were launched in March under the supervision of the Hatay Archeology Museum to uncover the entire mosaic.

Mosaic will be transferred to the museum

Archaeologist Ozan Demir told Anadolu Agency that excavation efforts at the site are being carried out by a team of two archaeologists and eight workers to discover mosaics and other architectural remains.

Demir described the mosaic as one piece and noted signs of repair that had taken place during the original period. “We see evidence of restoration from that period,” he said. “The mosaic will be transferred to the museum in 2026. Work will continue to restore the architectural fabric in other parts of the site and highlight additional archaeological data.”

“Mosaic is not something that can usually be found in a regular home,” Demir added. “This indicates that it likely belongs to someone of high social status.”

He also noted that after the excavation of the 17.5-metre-long geometric mosaic, further work will be carried out on two other mosaics discovered nearby.

Archaeologist Mert Nalbantoglu said that this discovery is of special importance due to the excellent preservation of the mosaic and the presence of an inscription. “For us, the fact that it is so well preserved and contains an inscription makes it especially valuable,” he said.
