Rabat – A moderate earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale struck Meknes province late on Wednesday night, the Moroccan National Institute of Geophysics reported.

Nasser Jabour, director of the institute, told the Moroccan news network SNRTnews that the earthquake occurred at 11:43 p.m., and its epicenter was in the Ain Karma community in the state of Meknes, at a depth of 11 kilometers. Residents throughout the area reported feeling the tremor.

Local reports stated that residents of the city of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun felt the earthquake strongly, as many residents rushed out of their homes and gathered in open spaces and public squares for fear of aftershocks.

Local residents took to social media last night to report feeling the tremor and share photos of people gathering in open spaces despite the cold weather and continuous rainfall.

No human casualties or material damage were reported as of Thursday morning

Jabour said that while the Meknes region was not historically known for significant seismic activity, Morocco has recently been witnessing occasional seismic movements in various regions. He stated that such tremors in general are closely monitored by specialists.
