NASA satellites captured a terrifying image of a giant tsunami

In the summer of 2025, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. Although this is not one of the five largest earthquakes ever recorded, it is still impressively powerful. That earthquake triggered a tsunami that spread across the Pacific Ocean, and NASA's new SWOT satellite captured images of the monster wave in detail.
The SWOT satellite, short for Surface Water and Ocean Topography, was recently launched in 2022. This earthquake is the largest earthquake captured by the satellite to date. Using data from it and deep-ocean tsunami buoys, researchers were able to map the earthquake's rupture zone, which extended about 250 miles and raised parts of the seafloor by as much as 13 feet. The satellite was able to capture how tsunami waves changed as they traveled, giving scientists an in-depth model to learn from.
Research on the event was published in The Seismic Record in November 2025. The publication highlights how dangerous large earthquakes can be, and shows how satellites like SWOT are changing scientists' ability to understand, track and predict tsunamis.
Details on how the giant tsunami was observed
Satellites have changed the way we study our planet and given us rare glimpses into events occurring in the ocean that humans may not be able to see, like this record wave. To figure out exactly how the 2025 Kamchatka tsunami will form and spread, scientists collected data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) tsunami warning system and NASA's SWOT satellite.
NOAA's system, known as DART (Deep Ocean Tsunami Assessment and Reporting), uses sensors mounted on the seafloor that can detect changes in water pressure. It then sends that data to surface buoys and satellites in near real time. When the Kamchatka earthquake struck, many of these stations immediately switched to high alert mode, capturing images of the tsunami as it moved away from the source.
The research team focused on the closest sensors, filtering out natural ocean tides so they could work backwards and estimate how the seafloor actually moved during an earthquake. Meanwhile, SWOT passed over the area and recorded a 75-mile-wide strip of the ocean surface, capturing the shape and movement of the tsunami from space with high resolution. Processing the data allowed scientists to clearly see how tsunami waves spread and disperse despite the speed of the tsunami's movement.

Earthquakes and their resulting tsunamis may be more dangerous than we thought, and this data provides key insights to help us learn and prepare for these events. What made this event even more interesting is that its data can be compared to a 9.0 magnitude earthquake in the same area that occurred in 1952 and which included the same fault zone.
By comparing the two earthquakes, scientists concluded that the 1952 earthquake did not release all the stress built up in the fault, leading to this latest quake. Because these quakes occurred close to each other, they challenge ancient hazard models that expect large earthquakes to be separated by hundreds of years. Scientists were also able to analyze where the two quakes occurred, with the older quake being closer to the seafloor and the more recent one deeper underground, and how that affects the size of the tsunami at the ocean's surface. Although both resulted in evacuations, the 2025 tsunami did not cause the damage that the 1952 tsunami did.
The SWOT satellite also shows that it has the potential to revolutionize real-world response to tsunami-related emergencies as it can provide data quickly. An underwater buoy system working in conjunction with the satellite has proven reliable in tracking tsunami waves. Scientists are now looking to the future of how this system will work with coastal warning systems and help the public safely respond to giant tsunamis.

Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
