Poll: 67% of Noto earthquake survivors feel little progress in reconstruction

A survey of survivors of the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake in central Japan showed that two-thirds felt little progress had been made in recovery and reconstruction, a similar finding to a study conducted a year earlier.

Thursday next week will mark two years since the powerful earthquake that struck the peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture and surrounding areas on New Year's Day.

NHK conducted the survey between late November and mid-December, in cooperation with members of a symposium led by Professor Sekiya Naoya of the University of Tokyo.

The survey included earthquake survivors living in temporary housing in the province. A total of 372 people responded.

When asked how much progress had been made in the recovery and reconstruction process, 22% said not at all, and 45% said not much. 28% said that some progress had been made, and 3% said that progress had been steady.

The survey also asked about people's biggest problems. Half of the survey participants said that housing conditions were their main problem. Twenty-one percent cited their living environment. Other problems included health and social care at 9 percent, jobs at 5 percent, and relationships with others at 4 percent.

A woman in her 60s living in temporary housing in the peninsula city of Wajima said she hopes to rebuild her home as soon as possible. Land surveying and estimating rebuilding costs are moving slowly, she said, while construction costs continue to rise.

Another survivor in his 60s from the city of Suzhou on the peninsula said he had disposed of his home and many of his belongings. He added that he has lost touch with most people, and sometimes spends an entire day without speaking to anyone.
