A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan – DW – 12/27/2025

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off Taiwan's northeastern coast late Saturday, the island's Central Meteorological Administration said.

She added that the earthquake occurred about 32 kilometers off the city of Yilan and occurred at 11:05 pm local time (1505 GMT) and was at a depth of 73 kilometers (45 miles).

Residents and local media described how the quake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei, as the government sent alerts to public cellphones.

Local media reported that some ceilings collapsed and supermarket shelves fell.

Rail operators have temporarily slowed some train and high-speed rail services as a precaution.

But within minutes, the Taipei City government said there were no immediate reports of major damage.

Reuters news agency quoted the country's fire department as saying that the earthquake was not strong enough to issue a tsunami warning.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te urged residents to “remain vigilant.” He encouraged them to check on their families and friends and warned of possible aftershocks.

However, the shaking led to the evacuation of a small number of facilities owned by TSMC, the world's largest chipmaker.

The company said in a brief statement: “Giving priority to employee safety, we are conducting external evacuations and headcounts in accordance with emergency response procedures. Work safety systems in all facilities are operating normally.”

Taiwan is vital to the global technology sector because it produces the most advanced semiconductors, including cutting-edge chips that no other country can currently compete with.

Any disruption to Taiwan's chip industry would shake global supply chains, cripple industries from smartphones to cars and push up technology prices around the world.
