A 7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes Yilan

The Central Meteorological Administration (CWA) said a 7.0-magnitude earthquake occurred off Yilan City at 11:05 pm yesterday.

Authority data showed that the epicenter of the earthquake was at sea, about 32.3 km east of Yilan County Hall, and at a depth of 72.8 km.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

The data showed that the intensity of the quake, which measures the actual impact of a seismic event, reached 4 in the Yilan County area on Taiwan's seven-level intensity scale.

4 were measured in other parts of eastern, northern and central Taiwan as well as Tainan, 3 in Kaohsiung and Pingtung County, 2 in Linqiang and Pinghu Counties and 1 in Kinmen County.

This is the third earthquake in Taiwan with a magnitude of 7 or higher, after the 7.3-magnitude earthquake on September 21, 1999 and the 7.2-magnitude earthquake on April 3 of last year, the authority said in a press conference held at 11:50 pm yesterday.

She added that the main cause of the earthquake is related to the interaction between the Philippine Sea plate and the Eurasian plate, adding that the earthquake was at a depth of 72.8 kilometers, and is classified as a medium depth earthquake.

Because it occurred at a relatively greater depth, the intensity of the tremors was spread over a fairly wide area throughout Taiwan, the authority said, adding that damage from the quake should be limited because it was relatively deep and struck offshore.

She added that people should be on alert in anticipation of aftershocks ranging in strength from 5.5 to 6.0 degrees next day.

The Taiwanese power company said that electricity was cut off to more than 3,000 homes in Yilan for a short period.

Major chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電) said a small number of its facilities in the Northern Hsinchu Science Park had met evacuation limits after the quake and evacuated employees had since returned to their sites.
