An earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale was reported near Lancaster

A 3.1-magnitude earthquake occurred on Dec. 28 in the area of ​​Madison and Garrard counties in central Kentucky, according to USGS reports.

The quake, first reported by the USGS around 12:47 p.m., occurred about 7 miles east-northeast of the city of Lancaster, which is about 100 miles southeast of Louisville and 40 miles south of Lexington.

National Weather Service officials said the Louisville office received “several calls about a surge and some ground shaking in central Kentucky.” In a letter to X, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said officials received reports of shaking, but no reports of injuries or property damage.

Just after 2:15 p.m. on December 28, Garrard County Emergency Management officials said first responders and Kentucky Department of Transportation crews would be checking local infrastructure for damage “over the next few hours.”

“Earthquakes of this size are relatively common in areas near fault lines, and do not usually cause significant damage,” EMA officials in Garrard County wrote in a Facebook post. “The chances of another earthquake occurring on the same day or shortly after are very low, and post-traumatic shock is unlikely in this specific case.”

Residents who find property damage should contact Bluegrass 911 Communications, 859-792-3023, when filing a report, officials said.

The US Geological Survey initially reported the quake's magnitude as 3.2. An update dated December 28 showed that the earthquake had a magnitude of 3.1.

Parts of western Kentucky lie within the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which is considered the most active seismic zone in the United States. It includes southeastern Missouri, northeastern Arkansas, western Tennessee, western Kentucky and southern Illinois. Another area, the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone in southwestern Indiana, is also affecting Kentucky.
