Earthquake Tracker: A 3.1 earthquake shakes Kentucky, and the governor issues a statement

While you may think of earthquakes as a western problem for the United States, some of the largest earthquakes in US history have occurred in the east.

LANCASTER, Ky. – Residents across Kentucky were shaken by a 3.1-magnitude earthquake today.

The USGS said the quake occurred at 1:47 p.m. EDT about 6.8 miles east-northeast of Lancaster, Kentucky, at a depth of 8.5 miles.

So far, the USGS says residents of Richmond, Kentucky, have reported feeling the shaking.

Kentucky, we have reports of a 3.2 magnitude earthquake in Garrard County. This range doesn't usually result in significant damage – just vibration – and fortunately, that's all that has been reported so far. Emergency Management is monitoring the situation and surveying the damage. 1/2

Emergency teams are present at the scene of the accident to inspect the damage in various areas.

Officials are unsure of the source of the earthquake and are actively investigating.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said: “This range does not normally cause significant damage – just shaking – and fortunately, that is all that has been reported so far.”
