A powerful earthquake captured by satellites could reshape how we understand and predict tsunamis CTIF

When a tsunami forms in the open ocean, it usually evades detection by humans — a wave of deep water speeding silently beneath the surface. But on this rare occasion, on July 29, 2025, a satellite happened to be in the right place at the right moment.

The SWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography) satellite was launched in 2022 by NASA and the French space agency CNES, to measure subtle changes in water height and monitor slow-moving ocean currents. But on July 29, 2025, the photo captured something much more dramatic.

As SWOT passed over the Kuril-Kamchatka subduction zone off the Pacific coast of Russia, a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake occurred, placing the satellite directly above one of the most powerful seismic events in modern history.

Angel Ruiz Angulo of the University of Iceland and his research team combined data from DART (Deep Ocean Assessment and Tsunami Reporting) buoys positioned along the tsunami's path to reconstruct the rupture dynamics of the magnitude 8.8 earthquake. This seismic event ranks as the sixth most powerful earthquake recorded worldwide since 1900.

The Surface Water Ocean Topography, or SWOT, satellite has captured the first high-resolution spaceborne track of a large subduction zone tsunami, researchers report in The Seismic Record.

Its instruments recorded the wave as it unfolded in real time, giving scientists an unprecedented look at how the tsunami evolves long before it reaches land.

This observation, published in the journal Futura-Sciences, from the original study published by the Seismological Society of America, has quickly caught the world's attention from researchers who say the data could reshape early warning systems and improve our understanding of how seismic events transfer energy across entire ocean basins.

Ruiz Angulo said he and study co-author Charlie De Marez “had been analyzing SWOT data for more than two years to understand different processes in the ocean such as small eddies, and we never imagined that we would be lucky enough to catch a tsunami,” the SSOA wrote on November 29, 2025.

Satellite measurements picked up subtle changes in sea surface height, the kind of detail that's usually impossible to detect without specialized equipment.

For scientists who study tectonic hazards, this event is more than just a curiosity. It has been hailed as an achievement that could help improve tsunami prediction models and enhance preparedness in coastal areas around the world.

“The main implication of this observation for tsunami modelers is that we are missing something in the models we are used to running,” Ruiz Angulo added.

“This 'extra' variation could represent that the main wave may be modified by background waves as it approaches some coast. We will need to measure this excess of dissipated energy and evaluate whether it has an effect that was not previously considered.”
