Maduro in court – Ousted Venezuelan leader tells judge “I am a prisoner of war” | BBC News

Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro has told a New York court that he is still the country's president and a “prisoner of war” after pleading not guilty to drug-trafficking charges. Mr Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were kidnapped from the Venezuelan capital of Caracas on Saturday by US special forces in a military raid. In Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez has been sworn in as interim president in the National Assembly. He described Maduro and his wife as heroes and said he took the oath of office with pain because of the suffering caused by “legitimate military aggression”. The United Nations Security Council has held an emergency debate on the US operation. UN Secretary General António Guterres said he was “deeply concerned that the rules of international law have not been respected”. Iran and China called for Maduro's immediate release, with China's foreign ministry accusing the US of a “clear violation of international law”. Shares of some US oil companies rose sharply after the Trump administration made it clear that it plans to take control of Venezuela's oil industry.
