TOKYO – An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 struck the Chugoku region in western Japan on Tuesday, January 6, followed by a series of large aftershocks, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The agency said the epicenter of the first quake was in eastern Shimane Prefecture, adding that there was no risk of a tsunami.

Chugoku Electric Power Co., which operates the Shimane Nuclear Power Plant about 20 miles away, said operations were continuing as usual at its Unit 2. Japan's Nuclear Regulatory Authority said there were no violations after the quake.

The plant's Unit 2 was restarted in December 2024 for the first time since the shutdown of all Japanese nuclear power plants following the Fukushima disasters in March 2011. The intensity of the quake was a 5 on Japan's scale of 1 to 7, strong enough to make movement difficult without support.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, which is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Japan accounts for about a fifth of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

West Japan Railway said it had suspended Shinkansen bullet train operations between Shin-Osaka and Hakata in the wake of the quake.
