16 years after Haiti's devastating earthquake, small vigil in Haiti highlights the looming end of TPS

Sixteen years ago today, on January 12, 2010, a powerful earthquake devastated Haiti. The Haitian government estimated that more than 316,000 people were killed or missing.

One woman from South Florida, who asked that we call her “Lynn” because of her legal status, says she has lived in the United States since kindergarten. Now in her late 20s, she works in technology and has built a life here, and says she is afraid she will be forced to return.

“I hope and pray. I want to stay here. I can't imagine my life in Haiti,” Lynn said.

She says people often wonder why she didn't do something about her situation sooner, but she says the system doesn't offer many real paths for TPS holders. “There are no options,” she said. “The temporary protection system was created to be temporary.”

Lynn says her family's home in Haiti is in Port-au-Prince, and with the violence continuing, she believes returning would mean returning to danger and instability.

Miami immigration attorney Patricia Elise says she hears from many Haitians in the same situation. It is recommended to secure valid documents from the embassy of your country of origin. “If you want to work, have a valid ID. You don't have to just stay in Haiti,” Elise said, as some people are exploring visas for other countries.
