A strong earthquake hits northern Italy: what you need to know

The US Geological Survey said that a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Furnas Zarateni in northern Italy. The earthquake was recorded at approximately 10:17 a.m. local time (4:17 a.m. ET) at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 mi).

Furnace Zaratini is a village located on the outskirts of Ravenna in the province of Emilia-Romagna in northeastern Italy.

The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology recorded a 4.1-magnitude earthquake in the area.

The region generally has a lower seismic risk than Italy's more active central and southern Apennine regions, but it is still prone to earthquakes because the entire country lies within an active tectonic zone, the result of the collision of the African and Eurasian plates.

The Northern Apennine Mountains and the Po Plain are affected by compressional and thrust tectonic processes that cause tremors felt in Emilia-Romagna.

Ravenna is famous for its early Christian monuments, which are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are popular with tourists. UNESCO says that the city was “the seat of the Roman Empire in the fifth century and then Byzantine Italy until the eighth century.”

“It contains a unique collection of mosaics and early Christian monuments,” according to UNESCO. “All eight buildings – the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Neon Baptistery, the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the Arian Baptistery, the Episcopal Church, the Mausoleum of Theodoric, the Basilica of San Vitale, and the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classi – were constructed in the 5th and 6th centuries.

In April 2025, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Naples in southwestern Italy in the middle of the night, one of the strongest tremors to rock the region in recent years.

Naples is close to Campi Flegrei, a large, active caldera volcano located alongside Mount Vesuvius on the Campanian volcanic arc, which is prone to seismic activity.
