Earthquake Awareness Month keeps Missourians informed

HANNIBAL (WGEM) – Every February, Missouri marks statewide Earthquake Awareness Month.

Although the Tri-State Zone does not contain any active faults, the New Madrid Seismic Zone is located in southeastern Missouri.

The area remains active, experiencing about 200 earthquakes every year.

While most of it goes unnoticed, experts suggest there’s a 25% to 40% chance of a major earthquake occurring within the next 50 years, the effects of which we’ll feel right here in the Tri-States.

“How do you prepare for something when you don’t know what it is, when it’s going to happen, how big it is and what you need to do,” said John Hark, Marion County Emergency Management Director.

Stocking up on water boxes, non-perishable foods, lighting fixtures and heaters are among the things Hark recommends in the event of an unlikely event.

“If you know what you’re going to do and how to take care of yourself, it will help us be able to handle the rest of the situation,” Hark added.

Hark also added that locations along the Mississippi River would have the greatest impacts in the event of a major earthquake.

“Don’t think this is something we’re trying to create pessimism and doom, we’re not,” Hark said. “We are trying to spread knowledge and preparedness.”
