Erdogan remembers the victims of the 2023 earthquakes

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday commemorated those who lost their lives in the two earthquakes that struck in 2023, on the third anniversary of the disaster.

Earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 7.6 struck southern Türkiye on February 6, 2023, causing widespread devastation in several provinces and killing more than 53,000 people. The disaster led to one of the largest emergency response and reconstruction efforts in the country’s history.

In a social media post, Erdogan said the victims would not be forgotten, and reaffirmed the commitments he made to the nation in the wake of the earthquakes. He said the authorities pledged to preserve the memory of those who died, protect what they left behind and rebuild cities destroyed by the disaster.

Erdogan said: “We will not forget our brothers and sisters who lost their lives in the two major earthquakes that we witnessed on this day three years ago.” “We promised our nation that we would always keep their memory alive in our hearts and minds and rebuild our cities that were destroyed by the earthquake.”

Erdogan said that Türkiye had fulfilled this promise, adding that the cities affected by the earthquakes had been rebuilt within three years.
