Why did the Basitan earthquake cause so much damage in Bantul?

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Basitan Regency, East Java and surrounding areas on Friday (2/6/2026) at 01:06 WIB. According to data from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the sea, 89 kilometers southeast of Basitan, at a depth of 58 kilometers.

The earthquake did not cause major damage in Pacitan, but instead caused more damage to buildings in Bantul District, the special district of Yogyakarta.

Based on updated data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), as of Friday at 5:00 PM WIB, the earthquake has affected 224 individuals in three provinces and five regions.

The five regions are Basitan and Trengalik in East Java; Bantul in the special district of Yogyakarta; As well as Sukuharjo, Karanganyar and Wonogiri in Central Java.

The resulting effects include damage to homes and public facilities as well as injuries. 40 infections were reported in Bantul. In the handicraft sector, damage to 8 homes, 2 places of worship, 1 government facility, 2 educational facilities and 1 health facility was also reported.

In East Java, 29 housing units, one educational facility and one village hall were damaged. Meanwhile, in Central Java, there are 18 housing units, 5 educational facilities, as well as one unit each for places of worship, health facilities and public facilities affected by the earthquake.

BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Head, Abdul Mahari, said that BNPB is conducting extensive monitoring and coordination with district and district/city level disaster management agencies (BPBD) in relation to the earthquake.

BNPB provides coordination support, strengthens the emergency response command system, and prepares to support resources as needed.

Meanwhile, according to information on the Instagram account of the Basitan regional government, as of 5:00 PM WIB, there were 23 reports of damage to buildings, including residential houses, places of worship and educational facilities. It was also reported that there was one death.

East Java Deputy Governor Emil Elistiyanto Dardak said that the East Java Provincial Government, together with the provincial governments, will work together to help residents affected by the earthquake. Handling will be adjusted according to the damage category, ranging from light, moderate to severe.

According to Emil, coordination through the BPBD is necessary regarding the possible use of the District’s Windfall Expenses (BTT) Budget, as the District also has its own BTT.

Meanwhile, in Trengalik, 7 homes were reported damaged, including 3 units in Bindungan District, 2 units in Soroh District, and 1 unit each in Togo and Monjungan. In Togo District, the wall of the Winong village office collapsed, and the roof of the parking area at SDN 1 Demosari also collapsed.

“There were no personnel casualties. Only the parking area at SDN 1 Dermosari was seriously damaged and collapsed,” Trenggalek BPBD head Stefanos Triadi Atmono said.

Meanwhile, in an explanation posted on the BPBD Pacitan Instagram account, Ayu Krisna Ekaristi of the first-class Soliman Geophysical Station explained that the most severe impact of the Pacitan earthquake actually occurred in Bantul and not in the epicenter itself.

Based on measurements by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Ayu stated that the strongest shaking from the earthquake was actually in the Basitan region, where it reached VI MMI. Meanwhile, vibrations in Klaten, Wonogiri and parts of Basitan and Bantul reached IV MMI.

“From the results of the investigation, the most damaged location is actually in Bantul compared to the areas near the epicenter in Basitan. This may be due to the geological conditions of the Bantul area, which is a sedimentary area that tends to amplify or increase the amplitude of waves during an earthquake, resulting in greater damage compared to the epicenter,” Ayu said.

Ayu also stated that the Pringkoko sub-district in Pacitan felt tremors reaching V MMI level, but did not suffer major damage. This happened because the area is made up of limestone, which can dampen vibrations.

The same situation occurred at Gunungkidul Regency, DIY, which also sustained minor damage. In fact, Gunungkidul’s location is closer to Pacitan. Another factor that affects damage is the structure of buildings.

Meanwhile, the geological agency said in its analysis that the earthquake that occurred in southeastern Basitan arose from the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate against the Eurasian plate in the inland region with a thrust-faulting mechanism.

Based on the ground class map, the area closest to the epicenter is classified into hard, medium and soft soil classes. The areas affected by earthquake tremors are located in areas prone to moderate to high earthquake disasters. These areas have the potential to experience tremors on an intensity scale greater than VI MMI.

From the results of the investigation, the worst location was actually in Bantul compared to the location near the epicenter in Pacitan.

The geological agency urged the public to remain calm and vigilant, as well as follow the instructions of local BPBD officials. The community is advised to stay away from slope areas that have the potential for landslides, especially during rainy weather.

We also call on the public to observe and abide by the evacuation signs. In addition, buildings in earthquake-prone areas are expected to follow earthquake-resistant construction standards to avoid damage and be equipped with evacuation routes.
