South Carolina is experiencing its third minor earthquake in a week near Charleston

Hundreds of people in the area felt the earthquake.

LADSON, S.C. — South Carolina felt the ground shake again Monday, marking the third earthquake in less than a week.

Saturday night, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake struck near Charleston, 3.7 miles southeast of Centreville, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was the strongest earthquake recorded in South Carolina so far this year, and was felt by nearly a thousand people across the country and abroad.

That was notable but not unusual, says University of Charleston geology professor Stephen Gaume.

“It’s kind of a natural place where we get them,” Jaume said. “It’s a little bigger than usual. We’ve definitely had bigger ships over the last few years.”

Jaume says there may be an explanation for these earthquakes.

“It appears to be a place where some ancient faults about 200 million years ago are being reactivated,” Jaume said. “There are places inside the plates where things are weaker than other things around them. Then they move.”

It was the third minor quake to hit South Carolina in less than a week in the Ladson and Summerville area, raising concerns about the possibility of a larger quake. Such gatherings are not unusual and do not automatically indicate danger, Jaume says.

“If they keep having it for three, four, five days in a row, I might feel a little anxious,” Jaume said. “But a day or two is not out of the ordinary.”

Earthquakes here can appear stronger and can be felt over a wider area even when they are smaller.

“Here in the eastern part of the United States, the crust is cooler and more solid, and it transmits seismic waves much better,” Jaume said. “When you get out west, it’s warmer and more fractious.”
