Two small earthquakes shake the Irmo region within days

Two small earthquakes struck the Irmo region in recent days, and experts said that the tremors were minor and not cause for concern.

IRMO, SC – The Midlands team is feeling the vibrations again, but this time it’s Irmo.

There have now been two earthquakes in Irmo since Friday. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 2.0-magnitude earthquake on Sunday, just two days after a 2.8-magnitude quake struck the Irmo area.

“This is probably the most vulnerable Colombians have been particularly exposed to earthquakes in the last two weeks,” said Daniel Frost, an assistant professor at the University of Southern California, who helps monitor seismic activity across the state.

Last month, residents of Elgin felt several earthquakes. Now, Lexington County is experiencing these challenges as well.

Frost said South Carolina experiences earthquakes from time to time, but they are usually small.

“This happens almost everywhere. There are some places that have more earthquakes than others, but where we are in South Carolina, there are only earthquakes from time to time. Not the kind that anyone needs to worry too much about — and not the kind that anyone needs to buy earthquake insurance,” Frost said.

Residents said that the tremors surprised them.

“When I came out on the back porch, some of the neighbors were looking around — what was that? And I immediately said, ‘It must have been an earthquake.’ But it sounded so loud and that explosion was something different. It wasn’t just a jolt. It was like lightning hit the house or something, so it was really weird,” Christine Harp said.

“The dishwasher was running, and I turned and looked away and all of a sudden there was a loud noise and I thought for sure it was the dishwasher had just exploded or something. And then I found out it was an earthquake — I couldn’t believe it,” Jim Laboy said.

“We heard a big sound like an explosion and the house shook,” Karen Price said.

Scientists did not determine the cause of the earthquakes. Frost said they would need to see a pattern or trend before drawing any conclusions.

In other parts of the state, some earthquakes have been linked to lakes or dams, but Frost doesn’t think that’s the case here.

“I’ve been thinking about this and I don’t really think there’s any correlation between earthquakes and Lake Murray. The reason I say that is because I’ve been looking at the river or dam levels on Lake Murray and there hasn’t been any significant change,” Frost said.

One resident said her husband checked the lake after feeling the shaking.

“We were always told that if the dam broke the water would flow away from our house,” Price said. “So he went out to check the lake and see if the levels had changed or anything had happened with that, and it stayed the same.”

If you’re worried about damming Lake Murray, experts say there’s no need to be.

“It would be far beyond the impact of this type of earthquake,” Frost said. “I wouldn’t worry, we would need a really big earthquake for that to happen.”

Aftershocks are possible, but they will likely be small, Frost said.
