Australia proved their absolute supremacy in women’s football, winning an unprecedented seventh T20 World Cup title after making short work of hosts England by seven wickets in the final at Lord’s on Sunday.

Among the greatest sporting outfits in any sport, the Southern Stars made a mockery of a record 151-run run, completing the formalities in just 17.1 overs with Sophie Molineux winning her first ICC title as skipper.

Young Phoebe Litchfield (48 off 35 balls), perhaps the best hitter among youngsters in women’s cricket, produced a 100-run stand with veteran Beth Mooney (64 off 49 balls) that virtually decimated an England attack that had to defend a total of at least 25 runs below par on a decent batting track.

Their century stand came off just 69 balls – showing why the Australians are miles ahead of the other teams in terms of skill and quality.

Litchfield, with superb hand-eye coordination, smashed his way to six fours and two sixes while Mooney’s accuracy and penchant for spinning strike left the Charlotte Edwards-coached side absolutely helpless.

By halfway Australia had run to 100 and it was a mere formality, the asking rate having fallen to less than running a ball.

The best shot came out of Litchfield’s closet when victory seemed like a formality.

Left-arm spinner Linsey Smith bowled one outside the left-hander’s off stump trying to keep it out of his striking arc. Litchfield soon found herself in a position where she played the reverse sweep with the ball sailing over backward point for a six.

Mooney was not one to be left behind as she lifted Sophie Ecclestone inside out to extra cover and then completed her fifty off just 38 balls, keeping her superb ICC final record intact.

She averages 90 every time Mooney has appeared in an ICC final (T20I and ODI) for the Southern Stars. It was also the first time she was dismissed in a T20 World Cup final.

Earlier, skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt scored a half-century but Australia’s bowling unit showed plenty of discipline to restrict hosts England to a below-par score of 150 for 4 in the stipulated 20 overs.

Southern Stars skipper Sophie Molineux’s decision to bowl first was completely vindicated by her bowling unit which kept England’s batters on a tight leash. And that too without the world’s greatest all-rounder Ellyse Perry rolling her arms due to injury.

If Sciver-Brunt (58 not out from 53 balls) and Freya Kemp (44 not out from 28 balls) had not added 80 runs for the fifth wicket, England would not have reached the respectable figure of over 150. England’s bowlers at least had a fighting chance.

Sciver-Brunt hit five fours while Kemp hit four boundaries and a maximum.

The dominance of Australian bowlers can be understood from a simple statistic: only two sixes were hit by English women in 20 overs. Alice Capsey hit one and Kemp, who gave the innings a boost towards the end, hit the other against Molineux.
