Naomi Osaka defeats Aryna Sabalenka, updated Wimbledon women’s tennis bracket, results
Naomi Osaka is three wins away from the first Wimbledon title of her career.
The women’s No. 14 seed attract a few stunned top seed Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6(2), in Sunday’s blockbuster fourth-round showdown. She will now face No. 10 seed Karolina Muchova in the quarterfinals.
Osaka was dominant with her serve throughout and did not lose a single service game. As a result, she was in control of the match with only a handful of break opportunities in the opening set and an overwhelming performance in the second set tiebreak.
In total, Osaka enjoyed an 8-5 lead in aces and won a remarkable 87 percent of its first service points. She also had 21 winners to Sabalenka’s 15 and was the better player throughout the match.
A round of 16 clash with Sabalenka was nothing new for Osaka, who advanced to the fourth round at Roland Garros for the first time in her career earlier this year but lost to the top seed.
This was also the first time Osaka had advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon in her career, and she was rewarded with the daunting task of taking on a dominant opponent who had already defeated her in the previous three matches this year. Osaka’s only head-to-head victory over Sabalenka in Sunday’s match dates back to way back in 2018.
“For my part, I don’t think I mind playing against anyone recently,” Osaka said told reporters. “Even looking at my results, all I’ve lost is that I like her and Iga [Swiatek] for the past few months. …Also, [Sabalenka is] the number 1 player in the world. If there is someone I had to lose to, I would choose that ranking position.
“I would certainly say I learned from all those matches, so hopefully I can apply if I play against her.”
She looked like she learned a lot on Sunday.
Osaka recorded a 6-2 victory in the first set after two early breaks. Sabalenka showed clear frustration with the developments, but Osaka was in complete control thanks to two timely break points and a handful of perfectly placed winners.
She even mixed in three aces in the opening set, dictating the tone in a way she couldn’t at Roland Garros.
Despite the frustration of Sabalenka hitting herself in the head with her own racket at one point, it was only a matter of time before the top seed started playing like that. And she rediscovered her serve at critical moments, turning two break points away from Osaka, while remaining on serve for the entire second set until the tiebreak.
But the tiebreaker went to Osaka, which was fitting because she was the better player and deserved a quarterfinal match against Muchova.
