Shakira and FIFA announce a donation of $500,000 to relief victims of the Venezuelan earthquake

Shakira has announced that she will donate $500,000 (£373,400) to Venezuela earthquake relief efforts.

The earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on June 24 recorded magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 and caused widespread destruction throughout the country. Nearly 3,000 people have been confirmed dead, with thousands wounded and many still missing.

Now, Shakira has announced that $500,000 from FIFA’s Global Citizen Education Fund will be used to support educational intervention for thousands of children affected by the recent tragic earthquakes.

Last May, Shakira announced that she would donate 100% of the profits from “Dai Dai,” the official World Cup anthem, to the FIFA Global Citizens’ Education Fund. The singer has spent years serving on the fund’s board of directors, and will also perform at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Final.

In a new video, Shakira encouraged soccer fans, as well as world leaders, to also contribute to the fund, which raises $100 million to provide better educational opportunities and various other resources to students around the world.

“In the wake of the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, education programs are likely to face long-term setbacks, disrupting the progress that has already been made,” she said. “As a supporter of the FIFA Global Citizens Education Fund, I stand with the children of Venezuela to help ensure that, as the country rebuilds, every child continues to have access to an education and the opportunity to learn.”

Other musicians who have donated to relief efforts in Venezuela in recent weeks include Metallica, whose members donated $100,000 through the All Inside My Hands Foundation. Rush also released a special T-shirt to support the victims.

More than 2,600 people have been confirmed dead as a result of the two earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24, and more than 60,000 people are still missing.

All four members of rising Venezuelan metal band Van der Dijs have died following the devastating earthquakes.

The country was also hit by aftershocks in the days following the initial quakes, while international aid and rescue teams were sent to help with the response.
