Mexico City and Mexico State are conducting earthquake drills on Wednesday

Mexico City and the State of Mexico will conduct a regional earthquake drill on Wednesday, February 18, at 11 a.m. to reinforce prevention in an area prone to seismic activity.

According to National Civil Protection Coordinator Laura Velasquez, the drill will activate 13,900 loudspeakers as well as cell phone alerts, to signal residents to evacuate.

While tomorrow’s exercises will only take place in Mexico City and the State of Mexico, federal authorities have announced two more exercises on May 6 and September 19, which will be national.

“September 19 will also be very important, because for the first time we will hold a national training on Saturday,” Velasquez said. “This puts us in an unusual context for all our activities during business hours.”

Historically, strong earthquakes have struck the capital on weekdays.

An official statement explained, “This change will allow for the evaluation of work and family planning mechanisms in a non-work and weekend context.”

September 19 marks the anniversary of the powerful earthquakes that struck Mexico City in three different years: 1985, 2017 and 2022. It happened on Thursday, Tuesday and Monday.

Velasquez pointed out that the seismic warning system worked normally and successfully during the seismic movements recorded so far this year, specifically those that occurred on January 2 and 16 and were centered in San Marcos and Guerrero, and those that occurred on February 8 in Puerto Escondido in the state of Oaxaca.

The authorities called on residents to remain calm when hearing the alert, identify the safest areas, follow evacuation routes from buildings and respond to the authorities’ instructions, remembering that preparedness and active participation are necessary to protect life.
