Six months after the Kunar earthquake, the Norwegian Refugee Council warns that some relief services may close

The Norwegian Refugee Council says that six months after the deadly Kunar earthquake, humanitarian aid has declined sharply, raising the risk of some services being shut down.

The organization warned on Thursday, February 26, that without immediate support, families face the risk of renewed displacement.

“Thousands of families who lost their homes in the devastating August earthquake are still living in a state of uncertainty,” said Jacobo Caridi, representative of the Norwegian Refugee Council. “Many have been living in tents or temporary shelters since the disaster, having to endure six months of harsh weather and a cold winter with only a piece of cloth covering their heads.”

“Many organisations, including the Norwegian Refugee Council, have now exhausted their funding and will be forced to suspend their operations,” he added.

“We are concerned that reduced support will force people to move elsewhere in the country to access services and try to rebuild their future, increasing displacement and hardship,” Karidi added.

According to the organization, shortfalls in humanitarian funding in Afghanistan have created serious gaps in response to humanitarian needs.

The organization stated that in 2026, less than one percent of the required funding has been secured so far.

Save the Children says that six months after the Kunar earthquake, 25,000 children are still living in tents.
