An earthquake shakes Tenerife and Gran Canaria with the update issued on Teide volcano

Thousands of residents and tourists were terrified after a 4.1-magnitude earthquake occurred between the Canary Islands today, but scientists say it is not linked to the activity of Mount Teide.

Residents and visitors across Tenerife and Gran Canaria have once again been advised to remain calm after thousands of people on both islands were hit by a 4.1 magnitude earthquake.

Scientists confirmed that the matter is not related to the seismic swarms recorded over the past two weeks under Mount Teide in Tenerife, and stressed that a volcanic eruption is not imminent.

Authorities admit that many people were disturbed by the quake and wondered whether it was linked to unusual seismic activity beneath Teide, but it has been confirmed that there is no such link.

“In 1989, in the same area, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded and felt all over the island of Tenerife,” said Rubén Lopez, a volcanologist at IGN, who separated this quake from recent aftershocks in earthquakes in the Cañadas del Teide region.

Locals reported rooms shaking and furniture shaking following the earthquake which struck today at 12.26pm at a depth of ten kilometres. The epicenter of the earthquake was not under Mount Teide, but on the Enmedio volcano, located between Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The earthquake occurred between the two islands

The National Geographic Institute confirmed that the magnitude of the earthquake reached 4.1 in the Enmedio volcano area in the channel that separates the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The seismic event was widely felt in different parts of both Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Due to the size of the earthquake and the depth of its epicenter, the quake generated a large number of reports from members of the public who clearly felt the movement.

In municipalities such as Areco in Tenerife, witnesses reported a tremor that lasted for about five seconds, with some locals even claiming that “the whole room was shaking” throughout the incident.
